When the redesigned Chevy Camaro arrives for the 2010 model year, it will face competition not only from its long-time pony pals – a redesigned Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger--but also from climbing gas prices.
Still General Motors on Monday took the wraps off the production model, set to go on sale in February.
It will have a choice of a 6- or 6.2-liter or a 3.6-liter V-6, an engine that gets 286 horsepower in the larger Traverse crossover. Estimated mileage is 26 m.p.g. for the V-6 and 23 for the V-8.
"We will have V-8s for those who want them, and we'll have V-6s that get great fuel economy," says Chevy General Manager Ed Peper said. "It will be a third car for some and an everyday driver for others. It's going to be such a fashion statement, and there's a lot of pent-up demand for a car like this," he said, adding that Camaro could attract owners of mid-size coupes and smaller cars.
"It's not just a Mustang fighter. We'll have a big price spread, and Camaro will have wide appeal outside that segment."
Chevy has avoided the pricing issue but Camaro will have to be in a range similar to Mustang $20,000 to $40,000. More than that and it would be in Corvette territory. Besides, the top-of-the-line Challenger is coming in at the high $30,000s.
